Hebrew and You: It's Written in the Stars!

Hebrew is a heavenly language (haha), so much so, the planets’ names in Hebrew represent their characteristics.

  • נגהNoga- Venus
Noga also means “luminosity,” which is fitting for the most brilliant celestial body in the sky, after the moon. This name refers to Venus’s radiance in the night sky and is also an Israeli girl’s name.

  • מאדיםMa’adim- Mars
In Hebrew, this name simply describes the fact that the planet is reddish. It comes from the word Adom (אדום), meaning “red.”

  • שבתאיShabtai – Saturn
Saturn was the seventh known celestial body. Its name comes from the name for the seventh day, Shabbat, meaning the Sabbath. The reverse case is relevant for English, where the day "Saturday" got its name from the “star,” Saturn.

Cool, huh?
