What makes Israel so special

Visiting for a while, you learn that certain things only happen in Israel: 

1. Memorial sirens are heard three times every year, then everything stops; cars and people, everyone stands completely still for a minute, in silent respect. This happens on Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom Hashoah (יום השואה), and twice on Memorial Day for fallen soldiers, Yom Hazikaron (יום הזיכרון).

2. Immediately after Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day), we celebrate the Day of Independence, Yom Haatzmaut (יום העצמאות). The quick turn between etzev (עצב)and simcha (שמחה), sadness and happiness, might seem shocking to outsiders... but in Israel we know this is a special moment. 

3. When someone accidentally breaks a glass, we shout… “Mazal Tov” (מזל טוב) - good luck. Why? Well, why not?

4. On Saturday, Shabbat (שבת), most places are closed: stores, public transportation… In many places in Israel, this really lets you feel the quiet magic of Shabbat.
