  • Israeli Nicknames: Learn Them, Use Them, Love Them

Every Israeli uses at least one of the following nicknames almost every day. The first on our list is Neshama (נשמה), which literally means "soul”, but is used like “my dear”. It's very common, but only use it when you know the person very well. Just to avoid awkward situations…

Motek (מותק) means the same as the English nickname "honey." You'll hear many couples calling each other "motek" and many parents call their children this too.

Chamud (חמוד), or Chamuda (חמודה) for a female, means "cute". You would usually hear this word aimed at children or pets. When it's directed at an adult, it might sound condescending – so be careful!

At the Rosen School, our Israeli teachers will make sure you master everyday Hebrew, the kind you want to know for your next trip to Israel. You can start using these nicknames for your loved ones even when you are abroad. Enroll in our live online Hebrew course and start speaking like a real Israeli!
