Truth behind the Star of David

  • Our Help and Our Shield

Shockingly, the use of the six-pointed star as the Jewish symbol goes back only a few hundred years. To complicate matters further, in Hebrew this star is not called a “Star of David” but magen david מַגֵּן דָּוִד - the “Shield of David”. Why is this an important difference?

The Hebrew word for shield magen literally means a protective covering. In Genesis 15, God makes a covenant with Abram, saying: “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield (magen)". In Psalms, we find another usage of the word in reference to God made by King David himself, repeating over and over that God alone is “our help and our shield” (magen), the provider of true security. Thus, the "Star of David" is actually a symbol of God's protection. The true power of the Shield of David can only be accurately appreciated in the Original Hebrew language.
