Hatikvah - The hope
Every Israeli knows the national anthem of Israel, known as הַתִּקְוָה - “Hatikvah”. You may be familiar with the tune, but have you ever stopped to discover what the words actually mean? The title means “The Hope” and refers to the 2000-year-old dream that Jews around the world have maintained since the destruction of the Temple – the desire to return to their true homeland in Israel.

Let’s take a look at a key phrase from “Hatikvah” and try to pronounce it in Hebrew:
Ulefa’atei mizrach kadimah
‘ayin letziyon tzofiyah ‘
od lo avdah tikvateinu
The meaning of these words is: “As long as our eyes look toward the east to Zion, our hope is not yet lost.” These are incredibly powerful words. Every day for twenty centuries, the Jewish people turned towards Jerusalem in prayer three times. The “hope” is the enduring faith that guaranteed their restoration to the Land of Israel. -
