Learn Hebrew with the Rosen School
The Hebrew dual form is used whenever talking about the plural of a noun that usually comes in pairs. For example, an eye, ayin (עין) or a leg, regel (רגל). In these instances, we use the suffix "a'yim" (יים). A pair of eyes becomes eina'yim (עיניים), legs are Raglayi'm (רגליים), and hands - yada'yim (ידיים). Few languages have this feature – Hebrew is one of the only ones in the world! And what about wings? Or shoes? They come in pairs too! They're knafa'yim (כנפיים) and na'ala'yim (נעליים), respectively.
Another one is ofana'yim (אופניים), the Hebrew word for "bike." Already guessed why? Because it comes with a pair of wheels, of course! There are plenty more examples of this rule: now, whenever you see "a'yim", "יים", you will know what it means!
