Acronyms are abbreviations that use letters of other, longer words and phrases. Hebrew has many of these and Israelis use them constantly. The following examples are some of the most popular ones:
1. Dash (ד"ש) is short for "drishat shalom" (דרישת שלום), which means greetings, as in "send my greetings to Grandpa."
2. Kanal (כנ"ל) is short for “Kane'emar la'el”(כנאמר לעיל), which literally means "Like was said before." Whenever you agree with someone, you can say "Kanal" and express that you feel the same way as the other person.
3. Sofash (סופ"ש) is short for "sof shavua" (סוף שבוע) and it simply means – the weekend.
4. And maybe the most famous, Tzahal (צה"ל) is short for Tzva Hahagana L'Israel (צבא הגנה לישראל)– the IDF, Israeli Defense Forces.
